Community Innovations Development Worker
Assisting voluntary groups to support older people in the Winchester district
The Community Innovations initiative is a joint scheme between Hampshire County Council, Health, district councils and the voluntary sector.
The team aims to support older people over the age of 65 who may be at risk of losing their independence and becoming isolated from their community.
How does it work?
The teams are different in each geographical area. Our local Winchester district team currently includes:
A Occupational Therapist based at Adult Services who has knowledge and expertise in health and social care. She builds links with other agencies and departments, to help identify older people at risk, carry out assessments of what the older people want and need, and draw up support plans.
A Support Worker who assists individuals by making the necessary links with volunteers and agencies and can assist people in starting activities, and keep in touch to monitor progress.

Older Peoples Area Link Workers (OPaLs) provide an information advice line.
ACommunity Innovations Development Worker (CIDW) based here at WACA who works with voluntary sector groups who provide support or and activities to a membership that included older people.

The CIDW is currently working in the city ofWinchester, primarily Stanmore, Winnal, Highcliffe, Weeke and Littleton.
Community development
The CIDW is able to assist Voluntary groups in a number of ways which could include:
- Offering support, advice and guidance to voluntary sector groups and organisations that provide support, advice and or activities to older people in the community. (This will include a wide range of groups including special interest groups and not just groups for older people).
- Engage with existing groups and local people within the local community who are interested in expanding existing activities and services or developing new activities for older people in the area.
- Provide support and assistance when required to strengthen existing networks and support networking, and assist in sharing of experiences and best practice between groups.
- Assist local groups and communities to develop their marketing and publicity skills to ensure that local people know what is available in their area.
